The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is the lead agency responsible for road safety in Nigeria. Established in 1988 by Decree 45 and later amended by Decree 35 of 1992, the FRSC was given certain legitimate functions. The current act for the FRSC is FRSC (Establishment) Act 2007. The FRSC has a variety of statutory functions, which will be discussed later.

Vision And Mission Statement

Vision

To eradicate road traffic crashes and create safe motoring environment in Nigeria

Mission

To regulate, enforce and coordinate all road traffic and safety management activities through: sustained public enlightenment, promotion of stakeholders cooperation, robust data management, improved vehicle administration, prompt rescue services and effective patrol operation.

Some Statutory Functions Of FRSC In Nigeria

1)Educating road users on the proper use of the road.

2) Providing rescue services by prompt attention and care to victims of road accidents.

3) Determining and enforcing speed limits for all categories of roads and vehicles.

4) Production of driver's license and vehicle identification number.

5) Collaborating with agencies, bodies and groups engaged in road safety activities on the prevention of road crash.

FRSC Vehicles Requirements 

Research has the record that many vehicles plying the roads dont have the complete safety requirements in a vehicle. Many drivers are aware of these requirements but take it as less or not very important and some dont know all the requirements. But for the benefit of those that dont know, and to serve as a reminder for drivers that knows, every vehicle plying the Nigerian roads according to FRSC(Nigerian Highway Code) must have the following items inside it

  • Drivers license 
  • Vehicle license 
  • Proof of ownership Certificate 
  • Insurance certificate
  • Road worthiness Certificate 
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Warning triangle (C- caution)
  • Jack
  • Spare tyre
  • First aid bag
  • Wheel spanner
  • Water
  • Hydraulic
  • Transmission fluid
  • Torch light
  • Tow rope
  • Spare fan belt
  • Wedges and others

Drivers License 

Driver's license is one of the principal necessities for driving in nearly each country of the world.  An official document known as a driver's license allows a person to legally operate certain types of motor vehicles, like cars, motorcycles, trucks, or buses, on public roads.

Vehicle License 

A motor vehicle license is a document issued for a specific car that is typically valid for a period of one year.

Proof Of Ownership Certificate 

This document serves as proof of title or ownership and the right to possess and drive the car for the individual.

Insurance Certificate

This document outlines the coverage of the auto insurance policy for the driver of the car.

Road Worthiness Certificate 

This document is issued after the Vehicle Inspection Office has done a thorough inspection of the vehicle. This check is done to make sure that all crucial components have not been compromised and that the vehicle is deemed safe for driving on the road.

Warning Triangle (C- caution)

The warning triangle is a triangular reflector with a sitting base used by a motorist to warn others in case of a vehicle breakdown. Every vehicle is expected to have at least two Triangles in the vehicle to be displayed this way below

On a highway or single carriageway, one is to be placed at 45m from the brake down vehicle and the other 45m after

While on an expressway, the first caution sign should be placed at 100m from the breakdown vehicle and another one at 50m from the vehicle

Note that upon vehicle breakdown, you are to activate the hazard lights before putting the triangles in place to ensure visibility

Fire extinguisher

The fire extinguisher is an active fire protection device used to put off small fire often in emergency situations. The dry chemical powder fire extinguisher is the one recommended for motor vehicle fire

  1. Articulated vehicle
  • No of units required: 2
  • Size: 9kg

2. Lorries

  • No of units required: 2 units
  • Size: 6kg

3. Luxury buses

  • No of units required: 2 units
  • Size: 6kg

4. Medium buses

  • No of units required: 1 unit
  • Size: 2kg

5. Light goods Vans

  • No of units required: 1 unit
  • Size: 1kg

6. Taxis

  • No of units required: 1 unit
  • Size: 1 kg

7. Cars

  • No of units required: 1 unit
  • Size: 1kg

First Aid Bag

First Aid Box, first aid bag or first aid kit houses items required for emergency treatment of an injured person before comprehensive medical care is available. Every vehicle is expected to have a first aid box. The following are expected in the first aid box

Jack

Every vehicle is expected to have the accurate Jack. A Jack is a portable device for raising a motor vehicle by means of force applied with a lever,screw or hydraulic press.

Spare tyre

It is an additional tyre carried in a motor vehicle as a replacement for one that goes flat, blow out or other emergencies. A vehicle must always have a spare tyre

Wheel spanner

Wheel spanner is a tool used for loosening or tightening wheel nut. A vehicle is expected to have at least one wheel spanner

Wedge (wheel chock)

Wheel check is a device put under a vehicle's wheel to wedge and prevent accidental movement and increases Safety while changing the wheel or tyre. It is expected that a vehicle must carry at least two wheel checks.

 

Laws On Display Of Vehicle License

What Section 26 Of NRTR Says

 26.—(1) The owner, driver or person in charge or control of a vehicle shall at all times when the vehicle is being used on any public road keep the current licence of the vehicle displayed in the manner hereinafter provided, and shall, on demand, permit any appropriate authority to examine the licence.     

(2) Licences, other than trade licences, shall be displayed in a weather- proof holder with a transparent cover and carried on the vehicle and in the case of—

(a)    motorcycles or trailers, in a conspicuous position on the near side of the vehicle not more than 76.20 centimetres from the front of the motorcycle or trailer ;  
(b)    motorcycles with side car, on the near side of the handle bar of the cycle or the near side of the side car ;  
(c)    in the case of a vehicle fitted with a front glass windscreen extending across the vehicle, to the near lower corner of the glass of such windscreen or in such other manner so as to be clearly visible from the front  at all times by daylight whether such vehicle is moving or stationary; and in the event of the licence being carried actually upon a glass portion of the vehicle and otherwise complying with these Regulations the obligation that the licence shall be carried in a weather-proof holder with a transparent cover shall not apply ; and  
(d)    all other vehicles, on the near side of the vehicle facing the near side of the road and not less than one metre nor more than two metres from the ground level and placed as near to the front seat as is practicable.  

(3)    Except when placed on or adjacent to the windscreen, the licence shall be placed and carried, so as to be clearly visible at all times by daylight to a person standing at the near side of the vehicle, whether such vehicle is moving or stationary.  

(4)    In the case of vehicle issued with a trade licence, such licence shall be displayed on the front plate bearing the trade number plates issued in respect of such licence
